The Yellow Envelope (aka my travel memoir) will hit shelves on April 4, 2017. After five years of living the book and nearly two years of writing and editing it, this does not seem like a minor miracle to me.
Maybe you have been following this blog for years and know all about my journey or maybe you’re new here and haven’t heard about The Yellow Envelope before. If that’s the case, here’s a quick explanation:
In 2012 my husband and I sold all of our stuff, quit our jobs and set out on a journey around the world. But just before our departure date our friends, Michele and Glenn, gave us a surprise gift: A yellow envelope tied in a beautiful yellow bow. Inside was a check and instructions to give the money away to those we encountered while we traveled. There were only 3 simple rules:
- Don’t over-think it
- Share our experiences (but only if we want to)
- Don’t feel pressured to give it all away.
The book is about the yellow envelope, of course, about who we met and gave the money to, and why. But it’s also about so much more. It’s about chasing a wild dream and then slamming up against the reality of living it. It’s about love and marriage and figuring out if it’s possible to find oneself while tethered to another. It’s about how one woman (me) found her voice and connected with her soul and how the world conspired to help her. So, yes, The Yellow Envelope is about the transformative power of giving. But it is also about the grand adventure of self-discovery that comes after flinging oneself -against all logic- into the great unknown.

Some Info about Pre-Ordering
1) Why are authors always pushing pre-orders? Why are pre-orders important?
There are a few reasons. First, all pre-order sales hit on the same day. So, say an author pre-sells 1,000 books (a dream) over the 3 months before the book is released. In a normal world, those sales would be spread out over 3 months. In a pre-sale world, all of those sales are tallied in the same week. That means that a bunch of pre-orders (that hit in the first week of the book’s release) can launch a book onto a bestseller list.
Pre-orders also help retailers take a guess at how successful a book will be and stock the book accordingly. Plus, if a book is pre-selling well it sets the stage for how well the book might do once it’s published.
2) Can I pre-order the book with a gift card?
Yes! When you pre-order your book with a gift card the card will be automatically charged just like any standard purchase.
3) I’ve pre-ordered the book with my credit/debit card but I haven’t been charged for it. Why?
Although you’ve pre-ordered now you won’t actually be charged for the book until it ships on or near the date it’s published (April 4, 2017). Guilt-free shopping today!
Advance praise for The Yellow Envelope
“I often say that once you embark on the road of adventure, you never know where you’ll end up. Kim’s story is the epitome of this lesson. Read The Yellow Envelope for an honest, refreshing account of personal transformation.”
– Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness of Pursuit and The $100 Startup
“The Yellow Envelope is an intriguing and riveting tale of Kim’s travel adventures. I was especially intrigued by her process of self-discovery, which is tightly woven into her experiences. She talks openly and honestly about earth-shaking moments, marital doubts, and quiet insights…often in the tone of sharing secrets with a best friend. Also, I loved the idea of the physical yellow envelope, a gift to be given away in ways that make you smile and make your heart sing. It’s a story with passion, risk, and humor.”
–Rita Golden Gelman, author of Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World
“An honest and heartfelt memoir about the ways marriage, travel, and personal dreams can sometimes clash up against each other, The Yellow Envelope is likely to inspire both wanderlust and random acts of generosity in readers. Set against the changing scenery of a backpacker’s life on the road, the story examines important questions about what it means to give and what it means to let go. A captivating read from start to end, it’s impossible not to become entangled in Dinan’s devoted world-wide search for finding a balance between love, life, and one’s dreams.”
–Torre DeRoche, author of Love with a Chance of Drowning
