The Yellow Envelope (VERY EXCITING NEWS)

There’s something that I have been waiting to share with you for a very, very (excruciatingly) long time. I know I’ve been MIA for a while and, yes, I did have a baby but actually, (here’s the secret), I’ve had two babies.

That’s right, two babies.

Or, at least, I’ve had one baby and am working very hard to bring another into the world.

Are you ready?

Can you guess it?

Yes, it’s true!! Sourcebooks will publish my memoir, The Yellow Envelope, in April 2017.

Those of you that have been following this blog since the beginning will remember the yellow envelope gift that our friends Glenn and Michele gave us way back in 2012 before we left on our trip around the world. And you’ll also remember that 3 years later Brian and I finally settled in Mexico so that I could turn that story into a book. Early last year I signed on with a literary agent at Inkwell Management who helped me fine-tune my book proposal. Last June, he sent that proposal out to publishing houses and, in just a few weeks, The Yellow Envelope found a home with Shana Drehs at Sourcebooks.

An update: I have recently started working one-on-one with non-fiction writers, helping them with the process of writing a book proposal and finding an agent. If this is something that appeals to you, please contact me. Unfortunately, I have a limited amount of time and can only take on a few new writers, but it has been thrilling to help new authors navigate this daunting path and I would love to work with you (Yes, YOU. Let’s bring your book into the world!)

Yes, I have been keeping this secret for that long and it has nearly killed me.

The last months have been some of the wildest of my life (and I’ve barely left the house). I’ve worked on my manuscript with a baby sleeping on my chest or over my shoulder or in my lap. My mom (bless her) babysits three days a week so I can write and Brian takes Juniper on all kinds of weekend adventures so that I can have a quiet house to work in. This book has been a team effort and I am lucky to have people that believe in me and are willing to do so much to ensure that I get this manuscript finished by the deadline.

Writing (and publishing) books is a dream that I have harbored since way back when I was a kid playing library and reading every single one of the Babysitters Club books. For years I’ve been imaging the day that I would walk into a bookstore and find my book on the shelves. To know that that day is finally coming (that it has, in fact, always been coming) is proof that our dreams are worthy and real and deserve our attention.

Signing my book contract with Juniper’s help.

I’ll have more to say about this down the line (and I want to eventually share more about the publishing process—I have learned so much!) but for now I just wanted to share the news and thank you all for following along, especially those of you that have been with me since the beginning. Your encouragement and support have kept me marching forward. I have no idea what this next chapter of my life holds but I am so freaking excited to find out.

(If you want to be notified when the book is published you can sign up to receive my very rarely published newsletter or just keep reading the blog!).
