The Yellow Envelope (VERY EXCITING NEWS)

by Kim on February 23, 2016 · 54 comments

There’s something that I have been waiting to share with you for a very, very (excruciatingly) long time. I know I’ve been MIA for a while and, yes, I did have a baby but actually, (here’s the secret), I’ve had two babies.

That’s right, two babies.

Or, at least, I’ve had one baby and am working very hard to bring another into the world.

Are you ready?

Can you guess it?

I SOLD MY BOOK!!

Yes, it’s true!! Sourcebooks will publish my memoir, The Yellow Envelope, in April 2017.

Those of you that have been following this blog since the beginning will remember the yellow envelope gift that our friends Glenn and Michele gave us way back in 2012 before we left on our trip around the world. And you’ll also remember that 3 years later Brian and I finally settled in Mexico so that I could turn that story into a book. Early last year I signed on with a literary agent at Inkwell Management who helped me fine-tune my book proposal. Last June, he sent that proposal out to publishing houses and, in just a few weeks, The Yellow Envelope found a home with Shana Drehs at Sourcebooks.

An update: I have recently started working one-on-one with non-fiction writers, helping them with the process of writing a book proposal and finding an agent. If this is something that appeals to you, please contact me. Unfortunately, I have a limited amount of time and can only take on a few new writers, but it has been thrilling to help new authors navigate this daunting path and I would love to work with you (Yes, YOU. Let’s bring your book into the world!)

Yes, I have been keeping this secret for that long and it has nearly killed me.

The last months have been some of the wildest of my life (and I’ve barely left the house). I’ve worked on my manuscript with a baby sleeping on my chest or over my shoulder or in my lap. My mom (bless her) babysits three days a week so I can write and Brian takes Juniper on all kinds of weekend adventures so that I can have a quiet house to work in. This book has been a team effort and I am lucky to have people that believe in me and are willing to do so much to ensure that I get this manuscript finished by the deadline.

Writing (and publishing) books is a dream that I have harbored since way back when I was a kid playing library and reading every single one of the Babysitters Club books. For years I’ve been imaging the day that I would walk into a bookstore and find my book on the shelves. To know that that day is finally coming (that it has, in fact, always been coming) is proof that our dreams are worthy and real and deserve our attention.

Signing my book contract with Juniper’s help.

I’ll have more to say about this down the line (and I want to eventually share more about the publishing process—I have learned so much!) but for now I just wanted to share the news and thank you all for following along, especially those of you that have been with me since the beginning. Your encouragement and support have kept me marching forward. I have no idea what this next chapter of my life holds but I am so freaking excited to find out.

(If you want to be notified when the book is published you can sign up to receive my very rarely published newsletter or just keep reading the blog!).

Congratulations, Kim! I have a dear friend who is a published author and I’ve watched her process – it’s arduous at best – so Yay! for you in achieving your dream of becoming a published author in a relatively speaking short period of time.

Can’t wait to read the book and find out what happened to the content of the yellow envelope.

It really is. I was just reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic (which I truly enjoyed) and she said not to call your book your baby… I was thinking NO WAY. She’s never birthed a human, she doesn’t know how similar the experience is!! That book is my paper baby without a doubt.

Kim,

I specifically remember a few years back when my sister told me about this blog she had just started following…and a post she read about the yellow envelope. I’ve been following you ever since.

Congratulations! I can’t wait to read the book when it comes out.

Thank you Lisa! It has been a challenge to find time to write with a baby, but on those days when I figure everything out it does feel wonderful (I have plenty of days when I can’t figure it all out… but those too shall pass).

Hi Kim!

CONGRATS!!! That is SO freaking exciting and a long time coming. I’ve been following your blog since you guys went on tour for Backpacker (we once ran one of their mini tours!).

I second what others have said. I KNOW you are super busy right now, but anything that you can share with us hungry wannabe writers (i.e., why an agent?) would be much appreciated. I’m in the process of writing my first book and am so scared!!

Reply

Kim March 13, 2016 at 8:06 am

Hi Patrice! I am adding the topic to my list of things I will write about as soon as I turn this manuscript in!! And, I totally get the fear. Try to ignore it for now- drown out all outside noise! It’s one thing I have to do while writing this book that keeps me sane. Otherwise I just get way too scared.
