Camino day 10 Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Belorado

by Kim September 30, 2013

The morning is my favorite time for walking. My legs and feet are free of pain and the promise of sunrise is exciting. It takes me forever to travel the first few miles because I’m constantly stopping to take photos. I am so in love with Spain’s morning sky.

Camino day 9 Najera to Santa Domingo de la Calzada

by Kim September 29, 2013

I showered and went to a café for a glass of wine and to type up yesterday’s notes. And I had a moment, sitting there in the bar, when it dawned on me that I was alone in Spain in a café on a rainy afternoon, drinking wine and writing. And I felt so free and whole. I felt whole. And I realized that somewhere along the way these past few years I’ve found something that I didn’t consciously know I’d been looking for.

Camino day 8 Logrono to Najera

When I finally arrived in Najera it started raining. I found the municipal albergue, took my shoes off, and walked through the door. The dining room was filled with other pilgrims.

Camino day 7 Torres del Rio to Logrono

by Kim September 27, 2013

It is a beautiful morning and the breeze is cool. The trail is thin with pilgrims and I walk alone past grapevines and olive trees. I am smiling and lifted. I feel so happy for this rich and colorful life of mine.

Camino day 6 Estella to Torres del Rio

I slept well last night. There were at least 16 beds in my room but no snorers. That’s a notable stroke of good luck. Plus, I’ve finally given in to the Camino nighttime especial and am sleeping in my underwear. It’s too hot.

Camino day 4 Pamplona to Puente la Reina

I weighed my bag at the albergue this morning. It’s 30 pounds (14 kilos). I know what you’re thinking. But my pack is actually beginning to feel like a part of me, like a limb. Or, maybe more like a hunchback or a massive tumor between my shoulders.

Camino day 3 Larrasoana to Pamplona

by Kim September 23, 2013

The walk today was nice, steady ups and downs. Hila and I walked together. I asked her important questions like “Do you have Ikea in Israel?” (yes) and “What side of the road do you drive on?” (the right).

There are not enough words in the English language to describe the color of the sky today. It’s a clear, deep blue and I am in love with Northern Spain.

4,000 miles for 500. I’m off to walk the Camino.

by Kim September 16, 2013

Somehow this summer got away from me: my dog got sick and I launched my book and spent a weekend visiting my grandma and now BAM I leave on Wednesday for at least 7 months and I haven’t even started packing. I feel crazy, like I am trying to hold on to sand in a windstorm.

The Sky Faded Soft Like a Lullaby

by Kim September 11, 2013

I drove to my parents. My Dad had to go to the doctor and I was going to take him. It was still so early, so dark, and I punched in the code on the garage door key pad and the door creaked up like an old man walking. I sat in the silence of the house on an easy chair, and in the silence I thought about how strange it is to grow up. I thought about how much more I know now and how much more I don’t know.

The things I know about happiness

by Kim September 3, 2013

I am an eternal optimist and I’m naturally resilient and these two traits keep me mostly happy most of the time. Still, I’ve said before that I consider happiness a moving target. Happiness isn’t something like a tattoo that, once embedded, stays forever. Happiness is not a destination.
