Dear Life,

Thank you for gray days of rain and the peace of indoors while the world outside drips and puddles.

Thank you for good books and blank paper and pens. Thank you for the limitlessness of creativity.

Thank you for the comforts of a quiet house: the dishwasher running, the dogs snoring in the corner.

Thank you for the soft passing of these days, for the beat between vibrations.

Dear Life,

Thank you for sweet baby smiles that make my heart explode.

Thank you for warm baby heads that my lips cannot resist kissing a million times over. And soft baby bodies that nestle up so perfectly in mine.

Thank you for delicious little baby toes and angelic baby giggles.

Thank you for the pure joy and excitement that pours out of my daughter’s eyes when I return from being away.

Thank you for the power to make it all feel better with a kiss.

Thank you for the gift of being a mother.

Thank you for my husband, who over-appreciates me and always gives me a positive outlook when I desperately need one. Thank you for the patience he has and the acceptance he has given me.

Thank you for laughter and how it makes me feel free inside. Thank you for the ability to make John laugh at the smallest little thing.

Thank you for the unlimited amount of love one can gather up and carry with them. Thank you for new loves and for old loves.  And thank you for the comfort of one day being reunited with lost loves, in some form.

Thank you for the sound of wind brushing through the trees and the feel of the hot ground on cold feet.

Thank you for forgiveness.

Thank you for naps. Thank you for chocolate. Thank you for ripe blackberries and juicy pineapple.

Thank you for soft blankets and for sunglasses.

Thank you for dogs and for the smell of dogs. Yes, I like it. No, wait–I love it 🙂

Dear Life,

Thank you for the overwhelming joy the Monday of a vacation week brings.

Thank you for the way the sunlight reflects off the lake today and the way a redheaded nephew giggles in the breeze.

Thank you for the smell of sunblock and lake water on my skin.

Thank you for the strange hum of far off boat motors as I swim beneath the waves.

Thank you for the dragonflies that flutter from raft to raft as we unconvincingly shoo them away.

Thank you for the years of memories this lake has sent us home with. While I used to be jealous that other families went to new locations each summer, I realize now that nothing beats a second home. This lake knows us as well as we know it.

Thank you for the safety I feel with my sister and her husband sleeping in the room to my left and my parents in the room to my right. Surrounded by love whichever way I turn.

Thank you for allowing us the chance to know this place during its heyday years ago, when the strip was bustling, the ice cream line took forever, and live music poured out of every bar. And thank you for the silence that descends over the lake now, allowing us to make conversation and new memories in peace.
