Everglades National Park in Florida: an outdoor lovers paradise

The United States is a vast and magical country of mountain ranges, plains and oceans. The west coast is popular for hiking and camping in National Parks. The east coast is famous for beaches. Of all of the states, there is probably none more popular than Florida, the sunshine state.

Parents flock to Florida with their children to go to Walt Disney World. Young and old alike head to the warm beaches where they float in the tropical ocean waters under the bright sun. Miami is popular for its food and nightlife and celebrity sightings. The Florida Keys is famous for its peace and quiet. From Tallahassee to Key West, Florida has a lot to offer.

With so much to do in Florida it is hard to choose what to do with your time while visiting. Florida holidays from Virgin Holidays is a good resource for planning your trip to Florida. If you are an outdoors lover like me, I’m going to let you in on one of my favorite places to visit in Florida, it is perhaps her best kept secret: The Florida Everglades.

Located at the southern tip of Florida, the Florida Everglades is a natural wetlands, designated as one of only three wetlands of global importance.  In 1947 the everglades was designated as a National park.

Everglades National Park is home to a diverse array of animals. With over 1.5 million acres of park, it is considered one of the great biological wonders of the world. Frogs, crocodiles, birds, raccoons, opossums, fox, deer and even panthers all live in the Florida Everglades.  A dozen threatened or endangered species call the park home.

But animals aren’t the only important aspect of the park. Black Mangrove trees, essential to Southern Florida’s first pioneers, thrive in the park. Soldierwood, an endangered species of tree, grows naturally only in southern Florida.

From beaches to amusements parks to parties, Florida has something for everyone. But if you’re the type that likes to escape into nature to restore your energy, there is no place like the Florida Everglades.
