A Fun Sport: Stand Up Paddle Boarding

One of the fastest growing sports in the United States is stand up paddle surfing, also known as paddle boarding.  This sport is growing in activity because it can be enjoyed wherever you are – all you need is a stand up paddle board, a paddle, a body of water and you are ready to go.

Enthusiasts enjoy the sport for its combination of a full body workout, spending time outdoors, and getting an excellent perspective of the water.  Standing at your full height while on a paddle board provides you with a great view of the environment around you and also with a perspective of the horizon, something you rarely get while sitting in a canoe or kayak.

A stand up paddle board resembles a surfboard, but is longer, wider and generally has a traction pad of some kind for you to stand on. Paddle boards also come in various sizes for people of different height, weight, and skill level.

If you are new to the sport, renting a board is the best way to get started.  Most cities that have a river, lake, or ocean by them have shops that rent out stand up paddle boards.  Currently, stand up paddle boarding is most popular on the west coast and in the gulf of the United States.  Stand up paddle boards in San Diego are very popular and there are many places to rent boards and take lessons.  And what better place to learn a new sport than San Diego?

If you are not by the ocean, river and lake stand up paddle boarding can be just as enjoyable.   The calm waters of a lake are an excellent place to learn the sport and river currents provide an exhilarating ride.

Stand up paddle boarding is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone.  It’s easy to learn, and most people need less than one hour of instruction to be able to navigate on their own.  So what are you waiting for, grab a board and start paddling!
